Team O'Neill Chases Swell Down the Portuguese Coast

August 31, 2026

The O'Neill crew rallied, threw the boards on the rack, and hit the Portuguese coastline with a simple mandate: chase the swell, score quality waves, and polish off the local cuisine along the way.

Day one started before sunrise with swell charts open, coffee going, and the group debating over where to point the van. Somewhere between the second espresso and the fourth pastel de nata, a decision got made. Boards were loaded, wetsuits packed, and the O'Riginals collection came along for the ride, all set to get shot on the road.

First stop: Supertubos, Peniche. It delivered exactly what it's known for: steep drops, heavy sand-bottom barrels, and the kind of power that doesn't give you room to think twice. A few gnarly wipeouts, a few standout waves, and the team walked away with that particular exhaustion that only comes after a session like that, where salt water is still up your nose and everyone's beyond hyped to see the footage.

The next morning, the hunt started all over again. Baleal first, trading stories with the local fishermen mending nets on the beach. Then Carcavelos, checking the peaks, letting the ocean dictate the GPS instead of the other way around. The session ran long, past sunset, until the crew in the water was barely more than silhouettes. By the time everyone made it back to shore, the hunger had fully set in, that kind where you'd eat pretty much anything put in front of you. Miguel led the way through the streets he grew up on, ending at a small restaurant just around the corner from his childhood home, where the guys showed up ready to eat the tables and chairs along with everything else on the menu.

From there, the days started to fall into a familiar rhythm: wake up, check the swell, load the van, and go find some waves. Some days scoring uncrowded peaks in perfect conditions, other days just a quick in-and-out session and exploring the coast on foot. The goal stayed the same throughout: score a good session, have some fun with the crew, and make the most of what the coast throws at you.
